At MetaPM we are passionate about delivering successful projects and a big part of that is Change Management. We have developed what we call the Four Types of Change Management.

The Four Types of Change Management include: Organisational Change Management, Project Change Management, IT Service Management Change Management and Enterprise Change Management. So, what do they all mean?

Organisational:

“What does the organisation need to change to be successful in meeting their strategic objective?”

Organisational Change Management means aligning the organisation and the actions of people with strategic objectives. This means creating the conditions and environment when change can occur.

It typically involves:

  • Definition of Mission, Vision and Values
  • Review of culture and environment
  • Structure review
  • Process review
  • System review
  • Leadership review and development
  • Strategic communications

Project:

“How will we manage this change and gain acceptance and adoption?”

Project Change Management is the ‘managing the people’ side of implementing a change. It is all about driving acceptance and adoption of a specific change.

It typically involves:

  • Change definition and impact analysis
  • Stakeholder mapping
  • Change strategy and planning
  • Communications
  • Training
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Risk analysis and mitigation planning
  • Resistance management

IT Service Management:

“Will this change improve day-to-day service quality, and how will we control the impact to service quality resulting from this change?”

IT Service Management Change Management means putting processes in place to control changes to IT infrastructure and software. It ensures all IT changes are assessed, approved, implemented and received in a controlled manner.

It typically involves:

  • Managing requests for change
  • Filtering change
  • Managing changes and the change process
  • Managing the change advisory board
  • Management reporting

Enterprise:

“How do we get the best visibility of all change happening and ensure accountability to implement change in the best way?”

Enterprise change management means providing direction and oversight to planned change. It develops organisational capability and individual competency through standards, tools and processes.

It typically involves:

  • Developing change heatmaps/dashboards
  • Developing change processes and tools
  • Piloting new approaches to change management
  • Assessing change capability maturity
  • Developing change management capability
