You may have heard the news – the 2009 edition of the PRINCE2® method has just been published. So what changes does this revision bring, and what does it mean for you and the way your projects are managed? To answer these and other questions very briefly, we've compiled this bulletin.

Why did the method need to change?
Continuous improvement requires regular amendment and adaptation to cater for changing needs and trends.

So has the structure of the method changed?
Yes, but only slightly. To name a few of these changes:
•  Components have been reduced from 8 to 7 (now called Themes)
•  The number of processes has also reduced from 8 to 7.
•  Tailoring PRINCE2® to the environment has been included as a new chapter

Which areas have changed?
There has been a change of emphasis on certain areas:
•  Benefits realisation through Benefit Reviews
•  Use of Lessons Learned, and
•  Tailoring the method to suit both the organisation and the type of project.

What else?
Well, for one thing, the way that Quality and Risk are managed has been changed to align more closely to ISO9000, Managing Successful Programs (MSP) and Management of Risk (MoR).

So is there a new edition of the official PRINCE2® manual?
Yes – there's a 2009 edition of "Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2®", which is now called a "guide" not a manual as its intended to provide guidance and be less prescriptive. There's also a new guide called "Directing Successful Projects with PRINCE2®" intended for Project Board members.

So do the training courses and exams change too?
Yes – our training courses have been redesigned to align to the new method. We've also introduced a new 2-day Practitioner course (including exam). There are minor changes in the scoring and pass-marks for exams as well, with the Practitioner exam time dropping from 3 hours to 2.5 hours.
